The stage is where the ceremony happens, where guests line up to greet the couple, and where most photographs are taken. It is usually the single most important decoration decision for a wedding or reception.
Choose a backdrop style
- Traditional mandap: pillars, a canopy and hanging garlands, ideal for Hindu ceremonies and temple-style weddings.
- Floral wall or arch: a dense flower backdrop that photographs well and suits receptions and Christian weddings.
- Panel and frame backdrops: carved, gold or wooden panels with florals, which work in halls with high ceilings.
- Sculptural halo or ring: a modern circular frame with flowers, suited to engagements and evening receptions.
Size the stage to the hall
A stage that is too small looks lost in a large hall; one that is too tall crowds a low ceiling. Measure the stage area and ceiling height at the site visit, and make sure guests at the back can see the couple when they are seated.
Flowers and colour
Jasmine, marigold, roses, orchids and chrysanthemums are common in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Choose two or three flowers in the wedding colours, and keep the fresh flowers where they show in photos, with artificial florals higher up where heat and setup time make fresh flowers impractical.
Lighting makes the photos
Evening receptions need warm, even light on the couple's faces and backlighting on the backdrop. Coordinate the décor lighting with the photographer so there are no harsh shadows or coloured lights spoiling skin tones.
Plan the greeting queue
At receptions, guests queue to greet the couple and take a photo. Steps on both sides of the stage, a clear exit route and a gift table nearby keep the line moving and the stage uncluttered.
Allow enough setup time
A full floral stage can take several hours to build. Confirm with the venue when décor teams can enter, especially for early morning muhurtham timings that mean overnight setup.
