At a South Indian engagement or nichayathartham, the trays exchanged between families are carried in front of everyone and appear in many photos. Well-decorated trays make the exchange feel ceremonial without adding much to the budget.
Decide what goes on each tray
Families traditionally exchange items such as betel leaves and areca nuts, fruit, flowers, turmeric and kumkum, coconuts, sweets, and the saree or dress and jewellery for the bride or groom. The number of trays varies by family and community, so agree the list with both sides early.
Match the trays to the stage
- Use the same two or three colours as the stage décor so the trays look right in stage photos.
- Pick one base material for every tray: brass, silver-finish, wood or lacquer.
- Use the same ribbon, lace or fabric edging on all trays for a set that looks planned.
- Label the trays discreetly underneath so the right family carries the right tray.
The ring platter
The ring platter is the centre of the ring exchange, so give it the most attention: a small raised platter or box, fresh petals or a single flower arrangement, and ring holders that keep the rings upright and easy to pick up without fumbling.
Fresh flowers and food items
Jasmine and roses wilt quickly in heat. Add fresh flowers and cut fruit on the morning of the function and keep the trays in a cool room until the exchange. Sweets should be boxed or covered with clear film so they stay presentable.
Transporting the trays
Carry trays flat in a car boot lined with towels, or in shallow crates. Pack the saree and jewellery separately and place them on the trays at the venue. Keep spare ribbon, pins and petals in a small kit for last-minute fixes.
